Scope and Contents

This collection consists of mostly programs, tickets, pamphlets, and other ephemera from Homer L. Dodge's time as a student at Colgate University. Also included are photographs and correspondence from his student years, reunion material, alumni newsletters, and a small amount of material relating to Ebenezer Dodge. One folder contains clippings and photographs documenting Homer L. Dodge's personal and professional life after Colgate.

Biographical Note

Homer Levi Dodge graduated from Colgate University in 1910, and went on to a long career in higher education as a physicist and administrator.

Dodge was born on October 21, 1887, in Ogdensburg, New York, and attended preparatory school at Ogdensburg Free Academy. He attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, earning an MS in Physics in 1912 and a PhD in 1914, and was an assistant professor at Iowa from 1915-1919.

In 1919 he became Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics at the University of Oklahoma. He held this position until 1942, making him the longest-serving chair in the department's history. His many accomplishments at Oklahoma included being named Dean of the Graduate School in 1926 and founding the Oklahoma Research Institute in 1941. From 1942-1944, he was the director of the Office of Scientific Personnel of the National Research Council, and in 1944 he became President of Vermont's Norwich University. He served as President until 1950, when he became director, and later chairman, of Norwich's Cabot Fund. He held this position until his retirement in 1960. Dodge died on June 28, 1983.
