Scope and Contents

This collection includes correspondence to and from Byron Hanke during his freshman year at Colgate; class of 1933 reunion materials; photographs, mostly from Emil Hanke's time at Colgate; and a small amount of miscellaneous Colgate material. Of particular interest are photographs depicting Colgate's "salt rush" and a humorous map created by a Colgate student.

Biographical note

Emil Hanke graduated from Colgate University with the class of 1907. His sons Homer, Byron and Everett graduated from Colgate in 1932, 1933, and 1938, respectively.

Emil was born in Buffalo on August 30, 1880. Following his graduation from Colgate, he held several administrative positions at schools in New York and Pennsylvania. He remained involved in the education field for most of his career, including positions as the YMCA Education Director of War Camps, on the secretarial staff of the International Committee YMCA Boys Work Department, and directing campaigns for educational institutions as a member of Tamblyn and Brown, Inc. He was involved with the Baptist World Ministry Crusade and was active in Colgate's alumni associations. He died in 1947.

Byron was born on October 28, 1911 in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. In addition to his degree from Colgate, he earned a Master's in landscape architecture and regional planning from Harvard University. For 32 years, he was the chief land planner in the architectural division of the Federal Housing Authority. He held leadership roles in a number of professional organizations in the landscape and planning fields and authored several publications. He died on October 3, 2000.
