The Humanities Committee defined its purpose in a memo to the University President on 1956 May 9th. The committee was tasked with conducting a study of the Humanities Department with several objectives in mind. They wanted to define its fundamental objectives; strengths and weaknesses of the department; how it contributed to other departments; how faculty could promote and fulfill the objectives of the department; and how the department's work could carry over from classroom life to life outside the classroom for its students.
