Fountain Fire Company Number One (Hamilton, N.Y.) collection, M2037
Dates
- Creation: 1948-1973
Biographical / Historical
The Fountain Fire Company was organized in Hamilton, New York on July 1873 and incorporated January 1, 1877. This collection very briefly covers the three short-lived fire companies that preceded the Fountain Engine Company No.1 in the period 1832 to 1860, and then details the organization, administration, and fire fighting techniques of the Company as their ability to fight fires improved over time. The collection includes summaries of major fires fought between 1832 and 1971. Particularly of note is full documentation of the Great Fire of February 19, 1895 which destroyed much of the Hamilton business district, fortunately with no loss of life. There is also some coverage of the Carl Baum Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 which co-existed with the Fountain Fire Company in 1973.
