Historical note
The Philoponian Society was founded in 1827 "for the promotion of athletic exercise" at Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution. Their constitution stated that members "found, by experience, that a suitable proportion of exercise, is indisputably necessary to preserve the health of students and render their minds vigorous and active." Members committed to one hour and thirty minutes of exercise each day, which could consist of manual labor or athletics. The society disbanded in 1832.
