Historical note

Chi Pi Mu was Colgate University's honorary society for pre-medical and pre-dental students. According to a letter to the editor in the May 9, 1928 issue of the Colgate Maroon, it was formed in 1927. Previously, beginning in 1902, The Chemical Society had served as Colgate's honor society for all chemistry students. However, in 1924 the Chemical Society became part of the national fraternity Alpha Chi Sigma, "a professional chemical society for industrial students only." Chi Pi Mu was formed to recognize high-achieving chemistry students interested in medicine and dentistry.
