Historical note
Colgate University has had student organizations devoted to debate for over a century. In 1904, the Debate Team adopted the name "The Thomas L. James Debate Club," although that name appears to have only been used for a few years. In 1913, Colgate established a chapter of the national honor society for debate, Delta Sigma Rho.
As of 2015, Colgate students still participate in debate and related activities through the Colgate Speaking Union.
