Biographical note

John Lorenzo Heffron graduated from Madison University, Colgate University's predecessor institution, in 1873. He was born in New Woodstock on November 29, 1851; prepared at the Grammar School, the predecessor to Colgate Academy; and came to Madison University from Fabius. He taught at the Peddie Institute in Highstown, New Jersey (1873-1875) and at a high school in Newark (1875-1878) and then studied medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York (1878-1879); Syracuse University (1879-1881); and Heidelberg University and Vienna (1881-1882). Beginning in 1882, he practiced medicine in Syracuse and taught at Syracuse University's College of Medicine. In 1908, he became Dean of the College of Medicine. He died in Syracuse on September 28, 1924.
