Scope and Contents
This collection includes meeting minutes, reports, correspondence, faculty committee records, and other administrative material. Subjects covered include academics and curricular changes, campus planning and finances, admissions, off-campus study, and experiences of Colgate faculty. Also included is a smaller amount of material addressing student demonstrations, discrimination, disciplinary issues, and fraternities.

Historical note
The Dean of the Faculty and Provost is the chief academic officer of the college and has primary responsibility for faculty personnel, curriculum, and supervision of instructional budgets. The Dean of the Faculty chairs the Academic Affairs Board and, in the absence of the President, presides at Faculty meetings.
The office of Dean of Faculty was abolished in 1934 and revived in 1945.

According to their website, the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty supports Colgate's "core academic mission, including faculty personnel, curriculum, and instructional budgets, university libraries, information technology, off-campus study, athletics, museums, institutional planning and research, and equity and diversity."

Arrangement
In general, the order of the material as it existed when processing began has been maintained. The main set of records were very roughly organized by subject and year. However, this may not have been the way the records were organized by the original department. An unknown amount of work had been done on the collection before the current guide was created. The 2015 Addition to the Collection was divided in to a general subseries and a subseries for department and program files, and both were arranged alphabetically.
