Biographical Note
Sylvester Burnham was a professor of Semitic languages and Old Testament interpretation at Colgate University from 1875-1918, serving as Dean of the Theological Seminary from 1893-1910. He was the author of Manual of Old Testament Interpretation (1882), Elements of Syriac Grammar (1884), and Elements of Biblical Hermeneutics (1916).
Burnham was born in Exeter, New Hampshire on February 1, 1842, and was educated at Bowdoin College, earning an AB in 1862, AM in 1865, and Doctor of Divinity in 1885. He was ordained in 1873 and spent time at Newton Theological Institution and the Universities of Heidelberg, Gottingen, and Leipzig. From 1873-1874, he was a pastor in Amherst, Massachusetts, and he taught Greek and German at Worcester (Massachusetts) Academy from 1874-1875. He died in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on September 23, 1935.
