Historical note
According to the 1970 Faculty Handbook, the University Council had "responsibility for all matters of policy regarding the operation of the University consistent with the By-Laws of the Board of Trustees except those matters specifically reserved by these Provisions to the Faculty, Committees of the Faculty, and the Student Senate." This meant it oversaw a wide range of issues, including those related to academics, athletics, and student life. The Council consisted of sixteen members of the faculty, including two representatives of each division; eight students; and the President, Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students, and Vice President for Business and Finance. The seven faculty commissions reported to the University Council.
